Initial impression

I knew this small guitar sounded great, but how great wasn't apparent until I could stand back and listen to someone else play it. For a small guitar it has amazing fullness of tone, and a clean strong lower end. And the shape doesn't look "little". The action is low and fast, and it tunes down to Open G without buzz on medium tension strings. Volume and projection are plenty unless one plays in a barn. The mahogany top has a warmer sound and I think is much better balanced than the spruce topped mini. And it's pre-wired for easy installation of a pick-up. It's sold in a nicely made and attractive Taylor khaki gig bag too. My only issues are that the tuners are touchy and the reddish pick guard looks kind of odd. Overall, it's a drop-dead terrific value that, though being sold as a travel guitar, will have a lot of players leaving their unwieldy jumbos and dreadnought guitar in the case when they're home. I can play this guitar while sitting in my recliner and not feel like I'm wrestling a gorilla as when I play my dreadnought.And if Taylor marketing folks are reading this; please drop the "mini" name that stigmatizes a marvelous small guitar as something less than the real thing. This guitar lacks absolutely nothing. And would a nice glossy black overlay on the headstock instead of the cheap looking paint break the bank?

I know sound is subjective but ive been playing for 40 years and i can read the differences in tone and how a guitar projects the sound.in my opinion there was a big difference between the sound of the mahogany and the spruce versions of this guitar.the spruce was ok but lost volume more than usual while sliding up frets. I while playing chords it did not ring out with the balance I like to hear. It was slightly louder than the mahogany, but I was expecting thisthe mahogany was for me in a different class---it sounded warmer--more balanced and when I played it with force the seperation was pleasure to my ears--its not as bright as the spruce ---I would describe its strummed sound as 'juicy' alive with character.its also a dream to play--stretches are a bit easier than on a full sized guitar--i would also say keep with the manufacturers recommended strings elexir--probably light around 11's

Not up to expectations

The GS Mini arrived with low action and medium weight strings. However, the bass tone of the low-E string was worse than I expected. Also, the guitar goes out of tune up the fret board. I don't know if this is because of the 3/4 size but it's annoying. I have a $35 3/4 size Hohner that also loses tuning up the fret board but I would expect this much more expensive Taylor to be made better.
