Not A Blues Harp/Great Sound

The chances are excellent that people purchasing a $5.00 harmonica are looking for your garden-variety blues harp. This is not a blues harp. My own knowledge and experience level on musical instruments is rudimentary but enthusiastic. Probably typical of people looking at this page. I knew I could not actually play anything on a chromatic harmonica, but when I saw an unusually long harmonica,the terminology "diatonic 24 hole" did not hit any warning flasher. And in fact, your garden-variety blues harps are diatonic. but here, instead of one row of 10 holes, yielding 20 notes depending on whether you inhale or exhale, this harp is 2 rows of 12 holes each, and plays sort of like a chromatic harmonica without the lever. The tone is quite beautiful - much better than one would expect for such an inexpensive item. If you've never had one of these instruments, it is probably worth picking up for $5.00 just to see what you can do with it. Right now, the answer for me is not much, since I really can only play blues harp. But I'm keeping it around - down the road, you never know...

This Huntington diatonic is a decent long-scale harmonica at a very cheap price. At this price point, one would expect a very crappy product, but it is actually a nice harmonica.Pros:Reeds are in tuneLightweightRelatively durable (though not nearly as durable as, say, a Hohner Marine Band)Metal upper and lower casingPrice (cheaper than most short-scale diatonics)The effort required to note bend is not bad for a two octaveCons:Plastic mouthpiece is a bit thin (but sturdy enough)Cheap storage boxAesthetically, the logo is much too big and is printed on the top and bottom of the harmonica. A very minor complaint however.I should also note that the only seller as of now, while giving good service, does not actually include the eBook described in the listing as it is a dead link.This harmonica is overall a good value, good as a beater, travel harmonica, extended-range harmonica, etc. Cheap and durable enough not to worry about too much, and good enough to be played as a harmonica and not a toy.
