Entry Level Martin

I believe the Martin DM may have been discontinued in favor of other entry level models, but because there are a number for sale, either new or used, it seems useful to have a review. CF Martin is an old and highly respected brand of guitars, but since 1960, some of the traditional woods used in guitar making have become scarce, forcing priced up. Martin, like other manufacturers, has been trying to find compromises in order to hold prices without major sacrifices in quality. The DM is a good example of compromise. It is a dreadnaught sized guitar with minimal adornment, and plywood mahogany back and sides. Other guitars in this class use unfamiliar woods, and also cut back on inlay and decoration. The DM has a matte finish, and a very narrow rosette. In mine, the top does not have an even grain. The top, however, the most important part of the guitar for sound quality, is solid sitka spruce, which is the preferred material. The fingerboard and bridge are rosewood, but the neck is apparently "selected hardwoods". Newer models in this price range have necks made of "Stratabond" which is a plywood-like material.The sound quality is good, and I can't distinguish between this and other guitars with similar properties but better appearance -- but that's a subjective opinion. Playability is good -- the neck is narrow and smooth. Tuning is easy and reliable. Construction quality is first rate. Other reviewers who have had the opportunity to compare the DM with other guitars in the Martin line report that the bass on this instrument is not as strong as on others, but this is compensated for by a brighter treble sound. The manufacturer recommends a medium gauge string (Martin MSP4200 SP Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings, Medium)A couple of caveats seem appropriate. A dreadnaught is a large guitar, and while most adults will have no trouble with the size, it's probably too large for children. Some other reviewers have expressed dismay with the spartan appearance of the instrument, and would prefer a gloss finish. This may seem like a trivial point, but guitars are routinely decorated, and if played with a group where the other player's guitars have more inlay and more elaborate rosettes,Finally, there are excellent guitars being made today, even at low prices. When you read a review that says "this guitar sounds as good as others costing two or three times the prices..." there's no particular reason to doubt the opinion. However, guitars still require a fair amount of individual labor, and a share of the price goes towards qualify control, the assurance that the fine details of assembly will be met, that the woods will work together properly. This is part of the price of a Martin or other quality manufacturer. In that sense, the Martin DM provides an excellent value, if you can find one.

Martin DM - The Martin Sound At Bargain Price

The "Martin Sound" is exemplified by the Martin D-28...a big acoustic guitar with big bass, a standard in country and folk music decade after decade. For a pro musician, a Martin D-28 is a working tool, well worth the thousands of dollars it cost.For the REST of us, who play at home, a D-28 is a big investment. The Martin DM was designed for us. It is a simple guitar with a solid spruce top and a laminated body.I played the DM in three different stores along with a D-28. The DM was just as loud and had the big, boomy bass of the D-28. The necks were identical in my hand, and both were easy to play. The D-28 had better sustain and more complex overtones and harmonics. I could hear a difference between the two models when they were in my hands. When I was sitting ten feet away, listening to another person play, it was difficult to tell which guitar was which.My DM was built in January 2002 and is now ten years old. The sound has opened up a bit over time and continues to get a bit richer in the mid-range and high range. The DM is well made and the neck remains perfectly aligned and the action is low and fast.Bottom line: the DM provides 100% of the playability and about 90% of the sound of a $3,000 Martin. Today, the DM sells in the $500 to $800 range, depending on condition and which case is provided, making it a "best buy" in the world of acoustic guitars.Someone who has been looking at "Made In China" or "Made in Korea" guitars selling for $200 or $300 would benefit from saving up a bit and investing in a Martin DM. The difference in playability and the difference in sound is well worth the additional money.
