Beautifully designed and crafted instrument

The Godin A5 Ultra is not an acoustic instrument (though it projects enough sound unplugged for satisfying practice purposes), and it definitely does not replace or approximate the sound of an upright bass. It does, however, produce a very full, dimensional amplified bass sound that emphasizes the character and presence of strings and wood, and blends well with acoustic instruments. It's not well suited for very loud situations, since the strings and top tend to feed back easily at high volume. But the sensitivity that causes that feedback also gives the bass a level of responsiveness and dynamic range more typical of acoustic instruments than solid-body electrics. The piezo/magnetic pickup combination is flexible and well-suited to the instrument (I can't comment on the synth interface since I haven't tried it). I also haven't yet used the Godin in the studio, but I have no doubt it will record beautifully. My only complaint, aside from the feedback, is the need for a string retainer at the headstock for the low B string, which rattled a bit when played open until I added a retainer. Aside from that, especially at the price, this is a superior, lovingly-crafted instrument.

Godin a5 fretless bass

I first ordered a new Boulder Creek A/EBG fretless 5 as my first attempt at ABG I wanted to keep cost down. It was about 7 bills, nice bass, good tone. I just couldn't get past the jumbo body style. Caused me wrist and arm pain. Sent back the BC bass for refund.I had been really wanting this A5 fretless as I was not really needing a full acoustic bass. This A5 gives me a very nice acoustic bass tone, not full on acoustic tone, more a very nice fretless, woody tone. Very nice looking bass and I like the more narrow body width than the jumbo BC I sent back. The A5 is abit heavier than I expected from a semi-hollow body. But with a wide strap it balances OK and evens out the weight for me. Tho new it came with no manual but you can get used the EQ sliders,volume/tone knobs fairly quickly.This is the A5 Ultra model which now comes with a Lace-Sensor magnetic pup at the bridge position. It offers the bass a more electric style of tone. It has two outputs on bottom-side of the body; acoustic/elec mix or electric. I prefer to use the acoustic/electric output. But I've used both with great results. I've not used this bass at a gig yet but look forward to it. I'm abit worried it might feedback at my louder live gigs than what I'm doing alone at home following recorded tracks thru a practice amp.I did take it to one rehearsal with my Motown/Funk band and they loved the huge bass tone this bass gives. Not sure I can use it all nite as we get into some funk/slap stuff. I'm still working out a setting for a better slap tone. It did sound great for our first set slow, soul tunes. Big, woody upright-ish tone works great on those tunes. Mainly got it for a spanish-acoustic guitar band that I will be working with in 2013.So far liking the quality, tone, looks and feel of this bass. But again, abit heavy to hold for 3-4 hour gigs. Regardless, I plan to use it with the above two bands and my regular Tx blues-rock band later this month. Its a keeper.

Very well constructed high quality instrument with a unique sound. Just to give an idea about construction quality: It came with a label with QC signatures from >10 specialists of Godin factory. I have had no experience with bass or fretless before. I felt like I had to give this guitar a try when I heard its sound.My first impression about playing this guitar as a novice bassist was that it takes quite a bit of physical effort to produce sound. Of course, this is not specific to this guitar. I stopped at the local music stores and tried a few other basses (some of them were fretless) which were no different in terms of playability. The main difference with this guitar is the warm acoustic sound. You can easily hear and feel the music when you play without amp. However playing to an audience definitely requires amplification. The amplified sound is rich and warm as well. Equalizer works well. Midi output interface seems to be specific to a synth. Synth sound might be interesting but I am more curious about its response to ebow. I don't have an ebow yet but I recently placed an order.After some struggle, I managed to produce some of the beautiful sounds I was looking for. I definitely recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a great bass/acoustic/fretless sound.
