5Excellent Guitar for Fingerstyle Playing
By DIY-Guy
The Seagull Peppino D'Agostino signature model from their Artist Series is a very well made cutaway model in a Dreadnought body size. Referred to as the Artist Peppino CW QII, it has a Sitka Spruce top, Rosewood sides and back, Ebony fingerboard and bridge, Tusq nut and saddle. The neck is constructed from a single Mahogany board with the headpiece cut from the board and then glued back on at the proper angle. It is a beautiful instrument with many fine details -- inlaid Seagull insignia on the fretboard and headpiece; piping around the sound hole, outlining the top and up the center of the back; an "Ebony" looking cap at the base of the neck where it attaches to the body; ivory colored bands around the top, back and headpiece. It has Gold, enclosed tuners with the Seagull logo and a high gloss finish except for the neck which is satin finished.Seagull is a division of Godin Guitars and the instruments are made in La Patrie, Quebec, Canada. Several of the accessory items are common across the whole Godin Family of instruments -- for example the case, the strings and the pickup system. From the practical point of view it is also well designed with a double acting truss rod in the neck, Adirondack spruce bracing and a dual pickup with preamp (Godin EPM Q2T). The pickup has a small microphone capsule on an adjustable arm and an under-saddle transducer. The electronics let you vary the mix of the signal from the little boom mic and change its phase relative to that of the saddle pickup. The preamp and microphone power comes from a 9 volt battery accessible via a small hinged cap on the bottom of the instrument. Battery life is predicted to be about 200 hours. The control panel has an integrated tuner and knobs for volume, bass and treble equalization and the mix between the two pickups. The tuner on-switch mutes the output. The sturdy 1/4" jack on the base is ferruled to act as an end pin for a strap, but there is no neck pin. They do provide instructions for mounting one on their web site. The instrument is supplied with a thin, self-adhesive plastic pick-guard; a hex key for adjusting the truss bar; and a very light, hard-shell case with cloth covering, shoulder straps and storage compartments (one inside, one outside). This instrument has gotten good reviews, most recently in an article in Acoustic Guitar (July 2010) as one of five, stage-ready instruments for finger-style picking. My choice of the Seagull was made after looking at a number of other guitars both locally and on-line. It seemed that my budget and instrument performance data were homing in on guitars in the $2500 range. I looked in local stores at several models, most notably the Taylor 12 Fret CG available as a Limited Edition model and at several Martin instruments. On-line, I looked at instruments from a variety of other manufacturers. I wanted a cutaway with integrated pickup and thought that an instrument with a shorter than average scale length might be a good choice. Buying a guitar on-line without ever physically examining the instrument takes a leap of faith-- faith in the accuracy of data provided by the manufacturers, in the lack of bias in the on-line reviews and in your understanding of your own needs. Two issues which I couldn't address via the internet were confidence in the Seagull brand and how the wider than normal neck might impact my playing style. Fortunately, I have a Godin Multitac ACS SA nylon strung electric guitar and when I found out that Seagull was a Godin brand, my worries about the brand were erased. The ACS SA is an excellent instrument, well made and delivering a lot of bang-for-the- buck. I know professional players that use Godin guitars and the Seagull web site lists a number of others besides Peppino D'Agostino that are using their Acoustic-Electric guitars. The specs of the Seagull Artist Peppino CW QII put it squarely into the class of instruments that I had been considering although at a significantly lower price. As it turns out the Godin Nylon SA has the same nut dimension (1.9") and the same neck radius (16") as the Seagull. For my style of finger picking, this neck works great. Bottom-line, I ordered the Seagull from Amazon on a Sunday and got it on the following Wednesday. It came out of the case ready to play with only a bit of tuning using the built-in tuner. The setup felt natural to me. As other reviews have indicated, the sound level from this guitar un-amplified does not blow you away, but the tone quality is wonderful. Intonation is very good and neck width turned out to be a non-issue.Plugged in, the Seagull pickup delivers a natural sound from my Fishman SA 220 Amp. The little boom mike was apparently well positioned at the factory since it added great warmth and presence right off. Playing this guitar with the AMP, it is easy to see where it got its "stage-ready" rating from Acoustic Guitar. With the strings provided (Godin A6 LT), it plays easily with a full sound both in standard tuning and dropped down a full step. The latter was a bit of a surprise considering the shorter scale length. This is exactly the guitar I wanted when I started my search -- a great instrument for finger-style playing at a great price!

5Awesome

I'm a self taught strummer of many years with pretty simple tastes and (sadly) talent so take this for what it's worth...I played around on my old Yamaha G50a since the 70's and it's been OK for the most part but any time I've tried to migrate from the classical format to the acoustic I've always had trouble getting my big clumsy fingers to work on the narrower neck (especially up towards the nut). I decided that I'd like to try picking up finger style now in my retirement, but the old fender dreadnaught I had was really frustrating me. I saw Peppino in a video performing on this guitar and really liked the sound. When I looked up its specs and saw the width at the nut almost the same as my classical I decided for once to not cheap out on a hobby and invest in this guitar. I have not regretted it for a single moment - except maybe when I paid my credit card bill off ;-) . I do not claim to be able to do this guitar justice yet but I find that for what I already know it plays nearly as easily as my classical. The action is smooth and easy, I seldom mute strings like I do on the old fender (who's action hurts my fingers after a couple of songs). There are a few pieces that I think the sound is too bright for and fall back to the classical, but that's rare. The electronics are still beyond my skill to appreciate, so I can't really comment on that but the built in tuner is nice - not that you need it very often . The Seagull holds tune so long I can't believe it, Especially after being used to nylon strings that seem to need tweaked daily. Like I said - I'm a rank amateur so I'm not sure what my opinion is worth but wouldn't give this Seagull up even if I had the chance to get my money back. I do have a few friends that are musicians that have looked it over and played it and they though highly of it too.
