Gibson Maestro: garbage or diamond in the rough/

I bought the Gibson Maestro flattop acoustic guitar at a yard sale for $5. How could I lose???Here's a rundown:Garbage: soft rosewood saddle actually has sawdust around the strings at the pinholes. The worst string pegs in the world. Cheap plastic bridge set too high. Cheap plastic nut. Horrible 'enclosed' style tuners . . . one was stripped and would not tighten (Hence the $5 price.) Strings are good enough quality to tie up your trash in newspapers for the trash can.In other words, just what I was looking for!Nice Stuff: well-built body and neck, no twist or cupping of the neck, so is something to work with. Top, sides, and back appear to be fairly good wood. Good neck attachment to the body. Plus it has the distinctive Gibson pegboard, and has "Gibson" at the top. It means nothing, but hey, it looks cool to tote a Gibson!I concluded that the box and neck are fairly decent - wood species and fit and finish - but with hardware made somewhere in the upper Amazon by the Yanomami indians. So, I bought a set of Gotoh locking tuners that happen to fit perfectly in place of the original tuners. Bought a new oversize rosewood saddle to replace the existing saddle. Bought a new bone bridge to fit the new saddle. Bought a new bone nut to replace the old plastic one.I tied up some trash with the original steel (yuk) strings, and put on a new set of Dean Markley bronze strings in size 11. I did not want to push my luck with the heavier 12s, as the greater tuning tension might have warped the guitar top. If a person only put on the Dean Markley bronze strings, they would be amazed at the sound. I have heard it said that there are two types of strings, Dean Markley is one and the other is every other string you could buy. I have used about every other strings out there, and after 10 or 11 years tried the Dean Markleys and never looked back. Sorry to gush - I have no affiliation with any guitar or strings makers.The finished product is a nice practice guitar, and I would even do some gigs with it.Complaint Department: It is really sad to see so many people saying that a cheaply made, badly set up guitar is great for beginners. Yuk. What a great way to ensure that your kid will drop the guitar in favor of video games!It makes good sense to give a kid a decent guitar so s(he) has a fighting chance to learn to play. End of complaint.I know that not everyone is going to do all the above modifications, but some are easy. Good strings, for instance. A set of decent bridge pins that hold the strings in. Better quality tuners are dead easy to replace as long as you have a small Philips screwdriver. The bridge ( the white part that the strings go over before they attach to the saddle.) Getting a relatively inexpensive bone (cow bone, usually) bridge will really help brighten the guitar's tone. You can get by mail order from Stewart-MacDonald in New York all of the above, and their technicians are great at supporting your efforts. Check out your local guitar store, too. Most carry what you will need. (Not so much the general musical instrument stores)

Great Guitar

As a first guitar, this one is really great. With a good set of strings (I recommend Ernie Ball acoustic or Washburn) the tones produced are very nice, especially for a lower end guitar. It is more than enough for a beginner to pick up and begin learning. The only con with the guitar that I've experienced is that the strings are rather high up on the fret board which makes barre chords more difficult. However, a capo can remedy this in most instances. If you already have a beginner guitar and are looking to move up, I recommend getting a mid-range Alvarez.
