Product Description

Ovangkol lends exotic flare to the 414ce, with a tone many find similar to Indian rosewood. Providing access to the upper registers of the fingerboard, the soft Venetian cutaway is both practical and attractive, and dramatically outlined with contrasting white binding. The Expression System pickup completes the package on this popular acoustic/electric guitar.

Taylor's Grand Auditorium Shape The Grand Auditorium was the first guitar shape designed from scratch by Bob Taylor. It was unveiled to commemorate the company's 20th Anniversary in 1994, and since then it has more than lived up to its promise. Although the GA has the width and depth of a Dreadnought, its narrower waist gives it the appearance of a smaller instrument, adds treble "zing" across the guitars tonal spectrum, sharpens the definition of individual notes, and also enables it to rest comfortably in the lap. Because Taylor removed mass from the width of the GAs braces, the guitar top moves faster, resulting in a snappy, bell-like tone. The GA is designed to be a strong fingerpicking guitar that also can handle medium strumming, and is exceptionally versatile.

A Venetian cutaway in the 414ce Grand Auditorium body allows better access to the upper frets. In the past, many players moving to acoustic guitars grew accustomed to the cutaways on their electric guitars, while others simply like the freedom of movement into the upper register that a cutaway allows. Now, cutaways are favored as much for their decorative appeal as for their function.

Solid sitka spruce top is joined with ovangkol sides and back for a tone similar to rosewood, but with the livelier sparkle of mahogany.

Perfect Guitar

I bought this guitar after first looking at the 410ce, which is also an amazing guitar. The 414ce is for me a perfect guitar, and in my opinion out-played and out-sounded guitars from Martin and other brands that cost far more. The neck of this guitar and the action on the strings has an almost electric guitar feel (at least it feels similar to my Fender Strat). The sound, both as-is and amplified, is vibrant and clear.It would be very hard for me to imagine you being unhappy with this guitar. I absolutely love it.

One Of The Best

I've been playing about 20 years but always learning.I have previously owned a lot of sheap guitars in the 100 dollar to 400 dollar price range (The 400 dollar Applause I still own as it was my first) then as I got older and could afford medium to high end guitars I started off with my medium end electrics (a 5120 Gretch and an Epiphone Les paul 2010 Tribute) , my first "good" guitar was and is my Martin D16 , I love it and wouldn't give it up for the world but as any guitarist knows , different tools for different jobs , for eg. my electric , I use the Gretsch for 50,s 60,Rockabilly , Buddy Holly style stuff that an Epiphone just wouldn't work on, I would no more use the Gretsch on more modern stuffThis brings me to my review , the D16 is a workhorse , it has a beautiful chunky distinct Martin sound and it is a great guitar but I did want a different tool for the job , anything lightly fingerpicked is not going to play that well on any Martin , the guitar is just not built for it.......maybe a D35 or D28 would ring more but when I picked up the first taylor I've ever played last week (a DN4) I was blown away by the tonal qualities.It just sang , but to add electronics and a months wait would have bought me up to about 1699.Then I eyed a 313ce , played it plugged in they wanted 1550 for it and it sounded great plugged and unplugged.....The new Expression System electronics are the best I've ever heard i my 20 years of playing ,The decider was the 313 and 414 both unplugged ....the 313 sounded like a plank compared to the 414ce which I attribute to the ovangkol wood used in the sides and back.......from what I understand it is a rare wood found in AfricaI was never a believer in the wood of a guitar making a 300 dollar difference in the sound of a guitar but now I am absolutley sold on it , The wood makes the sound , especially in the case of this guitar, throw in a Venetian style cutaway and a case which is easily 200 bucks and the whole thig cost me $1875.00 and I think it was one of the best deals I ever made....This guitar is stunning to look at , hol, play , strum, fingerpick etc, the highs are high , the lows are low and when amped it competes with a 3000 dollar GibsonBUY THIS GUITAR

Don't Let The Price Scare You From A Great Guitar!

I have been a musician for over 30 years and these days I can afford any guitar that I want. I bought the 414ce because I LIKED the clear, bright "punch" that it has. The dynamic volume is incredible. I did not like the higher models because I thought they sounded too "muddy" for my taste (after 30 years as musician, singer, songwriter, guitarist, engineer and producer many different qualities stand out to me). Then again, I did not like some of the other 414ce guitars that I had played before I found the one I now own.I love the woods of some of the higher-up models but the extreme models get a little too "gaudy" for me. I was disappointed that I missed the 414ce in a limited edition koa version that year but I'm sure I will see that again in the future.I will also not hesitate to buy ANY Taylor regardless of model or features because the quality, workmanship and customer service are THAT good!When you strum the last chord of a song that was an absolute pleasure to play (because of such a fine guitar) and a HUGE smile comes to your face as the tones and harmonics resonate from the magical woods and craftsmanship, you know that you are holding a guitar that your descendants will have to pry from the hands of your dead corpse!
