I recently purchased this guitar because of some good reviews that I had read, and also for its appearance. After receiving this guitar...I am happier with my purchase than I thought I would be. I have owned a Washburn D10S and a Takamine GS330S and neither look, sound, or play as well as this one. I am a beginner, but know a great product...this is it!

By keenan707
I've been playing for about 10 years now, and I was in the market for a cheap(er) acoustic guitar that I could play while at college. My little brother is in his senior year of high school, and I felt he should have access to a quality guitar (my original) for these last few months. I initially told myself that it's more important to him than it is to me, but I started having regrets a week ago (after all, this is the second semester of my senior year, too)! That's why I decided to splurge and buy another guitar. I did a lot of research into different brands. As a college student, I don't have the money to get a nice Taylor or Martin, but I also didn't want to spend money on a piece of plastic that I would feel embarrassed to play and, more importantly, that wouldn't feel "right" for me. I went with the Takamine G340 SC because it had everything I was looking for: it was reasonable priced [at the time of my purchase, it was cheaper here on Amazon than on other websites], it boasts fine craftmanship and woodwork, it's light but projects sound as only a dreadnought can do, the SC has a shallow cut, which allows me to fret higher chords and notes, and it looks great--I particularly like the gold tuning pegs. It's not super flashy, but it definitely conveys that a lot of hard work went into its construction. Some things I caught my eye:*There is only one strap pin located at the bottom of the guitar. In essence, if I played with a strap (which I don't normally), I would need to buy a strap that can tie at the headstock [not a big deal, but something you'd need to consider if you wanted to purchase a strap, which is sold separately].* The guitar strings that came with the guitar are fine, but the tone is personally not my favorite. I'm not of the guage used, but it's a bit too bright and airy for my liking. My G340SC was strung with D'Addario Extended Play Strings.* There was a minor defect with my particular purchase: There is a missing component to my G tuning machine. The missing part is a small piece of plastic that acts to hold the tuner in place as you tune your guitar. Without it, I've noticed that my G tuning key has slid inward approximately .01 centimeters. The distance is small, but it's enough to make it extremely hard to tune this particular string [i.e. I'm met with considerable resistance as I crank up the G string tuner. It's not the end of the world because I was able to eventually get the guitar in tune, and it's not something that I was willing to return to Amazon for a refund [I was just so excited to get the guitar after being without an instrument for over 3 months!].But, I will most certainly pick up a new tuning machine when I go home after graduation in May. It's an issue in that it needs to be replaced, but not issue enough for me to do so right away.Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this purchase, and I would recommend this guitar to anyone looking to buy a cheap(er) second guitar, or if you're a beginner looking for a solid guitar without the excessive price of most brands.Happy strumming,--Keenan
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.I learned how to play on this guitar and, after 6 years, I Still Use it.
By Andy Sebastian
I've own this guitar for about 6 years now. I bought it when I was 16, after scrounging up all the cash I had. At 23 I can honestly that I'm glad I made the decision back then to buy this instrument. I learned to play on this instrument and still perform live with it. It's hard to justify buying a new guitar. It has withstood these 6 years, has developed some nice wear to it and has even, i would say, sounded better with age.My biggest gripe with this guitar is the finish; it's too thick and affects the tone. This guitar has a thin, airy sound to it, but when I replaced the plastic bridge pins to boxwood ones it helped the tone drastically. The value of this product is its intonation and playability; you can play bar chords all the way up the fretboard and they will still be in tune. Tuners are perfect, they keep tune for days sometimes, but temperature and other factors will affect the tuning.I've recently have been playing a classical guitar because I dont strum with a pick. I still use this guitar for live performances at local open mic nights because of the picup(Not sure if this particular model has a pickup).Oh, and another small grip is that the plastic pic guard will eventually start detaching and will stap your thumbs. I just took it of mine.I definitely recommend this guitar to anyone trying to learn guitar or just wants a non-expensive guitar they want to play live and not worry about it being damaged. The thick finish on it takes falls and accidental smashes beautifully. After 6 years this Takamine is still kicking. Maybe I'll give this guitar to my future son if he ever decides to pick up playing after his father.
