The FB-54 is Fender’s entry-level banjo, but it has features you’d expect in a much more expensive model—especially the mahogany resonator and neck, 27.4” scale, aluminum rim, rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlay and chrome-covered tuners.

Beginners banjo's

One thing I try to steer students away from is a banjo with an aluminum body. A Wood pot with a bronze or bell brass tone ring has a much better tone. My recommendation is an old (70's) Japanese model such as Epiphone or Alverez. Some people refer to these as "Masterclones" as they were copies of the Gibson Mastertone professional banjos. The cheapest good new beginners model is probably a Deering Goodtime. Whatever you buy, Make sure it has a resonator (unless you plan to learn clawhammer style)and a hardshell case. The wood a banjo is made of makes a big difference in sound, too. Mahogany has a mellow sound with fast decay, while maple is sharper and has more sustain. If you are looking at walnut, its not a beginners model! White frosted heads don't look as good as clear heads, but they have a better sound. Years ago I used to play a fender Leo banjo that was very high quality, but with a clear head and it sounded cheap. Keep in mind, the more you spend, the better the instrument will be, and it will hold its value better over the years. The reason I am posting this is because I started out with an aluminum banjo and it wasn't long before I noticed the sound was awful and held my playing back as I progressed.Most banjo's don't come with any set up instructions, so you have to take even a new one to a luthier to tweak it. Deering has a lot of set up and playing tips free on its website. I like their site.. of course they want to sell you one of theirs, but even more, they want you to be successful at playing what you have.Good luck and practice as much as you can.

I'm a beginner on any instrument and thus one on the banjo.

I love the Fender FB-54 Banjo, from the stand point of look, feel & the sound is great. The one draw back for me personally is the width of the neck at the top. It is a little narrow for my fat fingers. I'm having trouble fretting the second string & getting free vibration of the first & third. If anyone knows of a banjo that has a wider finger board I'd love to know about it. I think I'd keep the Fender any way, but I might consider a second banjo to learn on.

Fender Banjo FB-54

I bought this banjo as an anniversary gift for my wife, she's a guitarist. Before I purchased I compared brands and prices and realize banjos can be quite expensive for quality (at least from the online reviews I read). I asked a musician guitarist friend and he recommended the FB-54 as a great learner's banjo. Finally, I went up to a guitar shoppe that had banjos. I compared them. The Fender FB-54 is about the best in it's price range. I couldn't see a whole lot of improvement over the more expensive banjos.The FB-54 is made in China (stamp on back of tuning head). The banjo comes alone with strings and bridge. The guy at the guitar shoppe strung it and set it up for me. The fit and finish is very good. Inlays are smooth and nice. It has great tone and sound. Plenty of volume for me. I'm very pleased with this purchase and got it for less than $339 with a 10% off coupon to the major national guitar shoppe chain; hint: it's a center for selling guitars. There was a small learning curve to playing a banjo because it is slightly different to a guitar not to mention methods of play.Things to look out for:If it is to be carried around I would strongly recommend a hard case for it.Get extra strings and a bridge. The bridge sets the action height so get an extra, off of eBay or Amazon, etc, if you want to sand the base slightly to lower the action. Have it set up and tuned at time of purchase.I did get a owner's manual, but I also found plenty of web sites for setting the truss rod if needed and tuning instructions.Get a pick, finger picks or whatever for your style of play.Overall I would recommend this banjo for beginners and see nothing wrong with it for the more advanced. The quality and sound is very competitive with more expensive models in my opinion. 5 stars for the quality at this price. There were no negative issues for my particular Fender banjo.
