Beautiful Classical Acoustic-Electric

Before putting this Cordoba guitar on my birthday list (and then managing to "bribe" my wife to make it an early birthday present), I did a significant amount of research on acoustic and acoustic-electric classical instruments with a retail price of $400 or less. Consulting "all the usual suspects" in the world of on-line guitar sales, I concluded that this was the instrument. We first made a stop at a, shall we say, large guitar-focused nationwide chain store within easy driving distance of our house to try instruments. The Cordoba easily held its own or out-and-out outshone others in the price category and even a couple that were more expensive. Since the retailer had only the demo instrument available (having sold out of the boxed Cordoba C5-CEs), my wife bought the floor model at a discount. Otherwise, my research suggests that buying this instrument on-line or in a box at a retailer would likely be safe. Keeping in mind that this was a demonstrator, my Cordoba doesn't have the greatest finish: there are some extremely minor nicks, the finish around the bridge is not perfect, a couple of frets are not dressed as well as they could be, and so on (all minor quibbles). However, the tone is quite nice, the intonation is spot on, and the tone is as good as nice, beautiful, and consistent as some of the classical guitars my institution owns (I'm a university music prof--guitar is not my main instrument, though), and those are purely acoustic instruments in this price range or even more expensive. The electronics are OK, but not exceptional. My biggest disappointment is weak bass response amplified; however, it is worth noting that the three nylon strings are significantly stronger through the pre-amp than the wound strings. So, perhaps the issue has more to do with the nature of classical guitar string sets than with the Cordoba C5-CE's electronics. I have found that using my bass amp (as opposed to a guitar amp) makes it much easier to balance the Cordoba throughout its range. Although it always is best to try instruments before purchasing them, I feel confident that this guitar could potentially be bought sight unseen with good results.

Update 10/27/2012. Still look forward to playing this guitar every day. I still like the EJ45C strings. I play this guitar through an old Crate CA30 acoustic amp and it sounds pretty good. I've sold a few of my guitars last year but will keep this one because it seems the first thing I grab. A C5-CE and an inexpensive entry level acoustic amp is a good start for anyone.Update 2/4/2012. I have tried several sets of strings on this guitar and the best, by far, is the D'Addario Pro Arte composites EJ45C normal tension. Strings are a personal choice but these really sound bright and liven up the bass sound. I like this guitar more now than when I bought it - for me it's a 5 star.April 26,2011. Is this a 5 star guitar? A qualified yes.I've been looking for an electric nylon guitar for some time, I fingerpick folk/rock.I finally took one of my nylons to a music shop to install a pickup and while it sounds good there are notes which cause the pickup/wires inside to resonate. So that was somewhat of a detour.I tried the least expensive Taylor Nylon, it was really good, and I had settled on it until I saw this Cordoba at the local Guitar Center. The best thing about the Guitar Center is that they let you play everything. So I tried all 3 of their C5-CE's and found one that sounded great, was set up well, and had no vibrations whatsoever. I played it through a nice acoustic amp for half an hour. It was $399 on the wall, marked down to $360 because of a blem someone left on the front. A really nice deal. The Taylor I had previously intended to buy was, of course, hundreds more.It's a "heavy" guitar, much heavier than your normal Cordoba. Not a featherlight classical build. If your going to take this guitar out, gig with it, or whatever I think it will hold up well to wear and tear.The neck and string setup is very nice, I won't adjust it. It is very comfortable to play.It has the fit and finish of a much more expensive guitar. I think someone mentioned that the bass strings are a little muted and I agree. You'll need to fiddle with the pickup and your amp to compensate.The sound coming out of the Fishman Pickup is true and just right. Not too bright, not dull the only problem is the soft bass as I mentioned.The Cut Away? I don't like them. Give me a full body and don't mess with the sound. Ditto for electronics. I don't like cutting up the side of a guitar for a control panel etc. But if you want an electric nylon you have to make sacrifices. This Cordoba sounds good unamplified, but like an Ovation guitar, it sounds better through an amp. You're not going to get the sound of a comparable classical which has no cutaway or electronics inside. Likewise, I think that's why the Taylor sounded so good; no cut away and minimal electronics. BTW, I believe the Taylor's have laminated sides and I think the Cordoba is real wood throughout.I asked about installing guitar strap buttons and their tech said the center spot at the bottom of the guitar was too weak for one?Your "Big Time" players would not give this 5 stars. But I think it has a great sound and is extremely easy to play. It's the best electric nylon I've played in this range so for $399 I give it 5 stars.My advice, if you are looking for an electric nylon, is to play everything you can get your hands on, I did. You will find considerable variation even among the same models and this is especially true of lower end guitars where quality control can't be strict. And don't skip playing through an amp. But be sure to include this Cordoba C5-CE in that group. Don't get too hungup on brands and price, let your ears and fingers make the choice.

Been playing guitar since 1961 and I just received this guitar for Christmas. What a great surprise. Plays super smooth, has fantastic low action and a fabulous acoustic sound.Very clean sound on all notes and just the right "acoustic slap" if you strum it hard. In the electric mode the sounds can be manipulated by the EQ's and it sounds real good, very little feedback. The built in tuner is a great thing to have.Only suggestion is to have strap buttons built in if you want to play it standing up but I am sure my guitar tech can do this with little problem. Makes me want to put aside my electric bass for a while (playing bass since 1964) and have some real neat fun on this great guitar! Good job, fellas!
