This member of the Martin family is designed for a full, rich tone, crafted from some of their finest tonewood selections. The back and sides are made from East Indian Rosewood, and the top from solid Sitka Spruce. The low-profile, solid genuine mahogany neck is mated to a solid black ebony fingerboard with matching bridge. In addition, the fingerboard sports a set of eye-catching inlays. The entire guitar features black and white Boltaron binding for a touch of class, and also features gold Schaller tuners and bone nut/saddle. Case included.

High-end Martin bliss

The Martin D-41 is nothing short of an incredible instrument. I played several of Martin's D-series guitars (D-28, HD-28, HD-35), a couple of their OM models (John Mayer and Eric Clapton signature models), as well as higher-end instruments from Taylor (model # slips my mind), Gibson (Advanced Jumbo), and a midrange Breedlove. Each of those instruments were great examples of what an acoustic 6-string can be, but once I played the D-41, I knew that my search for a keepsake-quality guitar was over. And I'll try to explain just how this guitar topped all other for my tastes.First off is the appearance. There are few mass-produced guitars that can wow a person like the beautifully-appointed D-41. There is abalone all the way around the solid sitka spruce top, in the rosette around the soundhole, on each of the bridge pins, on the tail pin, on the hexagonal fretboard inlays, and in the inlaid C.F. Martin logo (used in lieu of the traditional script logo). When the stage lights (or even your overhead lights in your living room) hit this instrument, it simply beams like a beautiful woman's smile. The tuners are 24-karat gold plated and have a very fine gear ratio for extremely accurate tuning. The ebony fretboard contrasts nicely to the abalone inlays and feels very supple to the touch. The natural finish and nitrocellulose lacquer clearcoat on the spruce top provide an extremely vibrant and loud soundboard. The East Indian rosewood back and sides are a dark and lovely color and grain and they darken the tone just enough to keep it from being overly bright in timbre. Overall, this is an instrument that you will find yourself simply admiring as if it were a work of art. In a way, it really is a work of art.Now for the sound. My belief is "tone above all else" when it comes to guitars. All of the visual appointments on this guitar are beautiful, sure...but they don't mean a thing if it sounds like a shoebox with rubber bands stretched over it. Fortunately, that is not the case. The tone is classic Martin dreadnaught. Loud, percussive, and rich. It has a tighter bass response than any of the 28 or 35 series, but retains the same silky smooth highs and clear, super-present midrange. This guitar could easily keep up with a banjo and mandolin with no amplification.In addition to sounding and looking fabulous, this guitar actually even smells good. When I open the case, I'm greeted by the fragrance of spruce and rosewood wafting up from the soundhole. I smell occasional wafts of it as I'm playing, and as I close my eyes, I know that I'm experiencing this instrument on every level possible. And what a wonderful experience it is.

I've owned my D-41 for several years. All I can say is it one of the finest guitar's I've ever owned. Actually it is the second D-41 I've owned. My first one was replaced by Martin after I had it for two years because I started to see a minor delam issue on the neck. Martin stood behind their product and when the repair time looked like it would be three months or more, instead they gave me a new replacment-I was impressed. I've had my second D-41 now for almost three years and have not seen any sign of delam or any other issues.But back to the guitar. I have seven acoustic guitars. The D-41 has by far the best tone. Even better than the Mark Knopfler limited edition Martin I own. Just remember when you buy a new one, give some time to settle in--over time, as it's played and exposed to sound vibrations the tone will continue improve. It took about 6 monhs before the tone on mine really started to shine. While it may seem pricey at first, you get what you pay for. Before I bought my D-41 I test played Taylors, Gibsons, Breedloves, Santa Cruz models just to name a few-all in similar price ranges. The tone on the D-41 was still superior.The appointments are exceptional--but I buy guitars for tone and playability. The D-41 does an outstanding job in both areas. I highly recommend the D-41 to any discriminating acoustic guitar player. You won't be disappointed. It's the one I always pick up first...and last.

The Martin D-41, at first glance, is stunning. From the abalone fretboard markers to the rosette, neck and body bindings, body abalone inlays,gold tuners, rosette, and beatiful spruce top, the whole guitar speaks quality and tone.I bought my D-41 in early 2006, and haven't put it down since. I've quickly given up other instruments--instruments that I once found 'good sounding' justdon't cut it when stacked up against the D-41. The tone of the D-41 is full, with a rich midrange, an enormous amount of high frequency 'sparkle' and a complimenting bass tonethat presents a sound profile that is evenly balanced across the strings, up and down the fretboard. Of course, the choice of strings will color the sound, but the strings are a matter of personal choice. The only change I've made is that I've added ebony bridge pins and end pin since one of the bone (Plastic) pins broke. The action is slightly high, as it is on most Martins I've played, but I prefer it that way. The neck, nitrocellulose finished mahogany, displays the concave bow of the neck characteristic of many Martin acoustics. This bow causes the action to be higher and stiff. On the other hand, the high action really allows the guitar to resonate freely and sustain--and this thing sustains even closed chords until the end of time. The concave bow also allows the guitar to maintain outstanding intonation. With the guitar properly strung it will maintain tune for long sessions of hard playing. However, to get the best tuning out of this guitar, you should tune it using a luthiers preferred method. First, tune the low E to a tuner, then tune the E on 4th string and the 1st string to the 1str and 2nd octaves of the 6th string. Then, tune the 2nd and 3rd string 'D' notes and the 5th string D harmonic to the twelfth fret harmonic of string 4. The guitar tuned as such should match a good grand piano tuned in even-temper. Also, you can almost tune the 1st and 2nd strings by listening to their open tones; the high B harmonics and high E harmonics would suggest that the guitar has been 'tap tuned,' that is the bracings and various components and woods have been selected to resonate at frequencies of the open strings.The instrument is senstive to changes in temperature and humidity. Occasionally it will buzz at some of the high string frets from the neck settling. However, I have been able to correct all such issues by putting lighter strings on and humidifying it very well for about 2 weeks. The other issue I had is that, about a month after I bought it, the thin nitro finish on the neck peeled, so I just peeled it all. I just use some light mineral oil to wipe down the bare neck-back, and as a result the neck feels satiny and fast.Overall, this is a very high quality instrument with both aesthetically pleasing looks and outstanding attention to detail in terms of both appearance and sound. If you like the sound of the classic pop, country, and rock studio acoustic recordings of the sixties to present, can afford the price, and don't mind the stiff, high action, then this is the perfect acoustic for you.
