Amazing innovation, and great sounding, too

Wow. This thing is incredible. I was searching the web for a "travel guitar" and came across this. There are you-tube videos that just blew my mind. How could this thing possibly work? The manufacturer's website is at [...].BTW, it's strictly acoustic, no electronics, although a guy calling himself AcousticMax on youtube has had his thoroughly modified with electronics.I wanted to actually get my hands on one before I bought it, and discovered that the manufacturer/inventor is a luthier that lives only 20 minutes away from me, in Northern California. I went, I saw, I bought. This is his cheapest model, the Transit series, available in Orchestral Model, Dreadnought, and this one, the Mini-Dreadnought size. Comes with it's own well-padded backpack that also has plenty of room for my 17-inch Dell XPS laptop! It should fit easily into airline overhead bins as a carry-on, but might be a bit cramped under the seat in front of you.I've seen and messed with other travel guitars such as the Martin Backpacker Martin Steel-String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar and the Washburn Washburn Steel String Travel Acoustic Guitar (Natural) . They have rather high actions, and sound like a plastic mandolin, but I figured that was as good as it got, and I'd make do.Wrong. The Voyage-Air's are made in China (how else could it be this cheap), very nice workmanship, and the folding-neck design is quite extraordinary. Once it's unfolded and screwed in place (takes less than 30 seconds), you would not know it from a standard Mini-Dread, the hairline crack in the fingerboard being almost invisible. It will blow away your guitar buds. The hinge feels quite sturdy, actually 2 hinges plus an anchor pin and a thumbscrew that doubles as, and appears to be, a strap button. After folding it away, and unfolding it again, it DOES need retuning, but the tuners manage to hold a tune pretty close. I notice the tuners require about twice as much twisting compared to my other guitars, so they may be special in that regard.Overall tone is beautiful, on a par with many $1000 guitars. String action surprisingly low, just like a "real" guitar, and no fret buzzing. In fact, it plays and sounds exactly like a sub-$1000 guitar of comparable type.There are close to a dozen different models in the Voyage-Air line, if you want fancier tonewoods, etc. This VAMD-02 being the cheapest model, to me the main drawback is the neck itself is finished in a way that slows me down a bit if I'm zipping around fast on the neck, so I suspect a more expensive model may provide more of a high-end experience. But for the money, I love this baby, and she is beyond my wildest expectations. My vacations will now be filled with hours of playing time, instead of hours of boredom.

Love my Voyage-Air Mini Dreadnought

Ordered my Voyage-Air guitar because I was looking for an alternative to a travel guitar that I can easily carry onto a plane. Received the guitar, immediately opened couldn't wait to play it. What I found is the guitar is a bit smaller than I expected, but similar and plays similar to a Fendar Accoustic guitar I have. Tuned easily, and has kept it's tune for several days, which was concern of mine due to the folding neck design. The tone and quality of sound is not as deep and rich as I was expecting, but still decent. I am probably just comparing it to sound of much more expensive Ovation and Taylor guitars that I play. It is very similar to the mid-priced Fender and Dean Accoustics that I also have. Overall, very happy with the purchase, great value for the price, and look forward to traveling with my Voyage-Air next week.

I recently purchased this guitar from Amazon, after reading the positive Amazon review as well as doing some other online research on this guitar, including the Voyage-Air website, YouTube presentations as well as other independant reviews of other owners of this instrument. I own a 1970's model, LYS guitar and a Takamine Jasmine electric/acoustic guitar. My skill level and experience is only at an intermediate-beginner level because I have not been a dedicated and consistant guitar player over the years, so my opinion about the Voyage-Air is limited. However, I was extremely pleased with my guitar when it arrived. The sound quality compared with my other two guitars, even though it is a little smaller than my Takamine Jasmine guitar. The sound was rich and resonate. The volume, to me, compared with my Takamine. I love the slightly smaller fret board which makes barring the chords so much easier. I am a woman, so I do appreciate not having to use as much stress on my fingers to get a challenging barred chord. Nothing cheap looking about this guitar. It is a lighter guitar and feels natural and comfortable to play. The unique design of the Voyage-Air is a brilliant idea. I wonder why no one ever came up with a guitar that could be folded down and transported so easily all these decades? Voyage-Air, from my research is the ONLY guitar on the market that is doing this. I paid special attention to the neck of the guitar when it arrived, slightly afraid that that the folding feature might be it's weak point. But upon examination, I noticed the flawless way the neck joint fit securely into the body of the guitar. Nothing flimsy about this critical part of the guitar. I had no trouble connecting the neck base to the guitar. It tuned up properly and sounded great the first time I played it. Love the carrying case. I wanted a guitar that would be very easy to transport as I look forward to taking my instrument with me to small group worship meetings in the future or just folding it up and taking it outside to play somewhere without lugging a heavy case or walking down the street looking conspicuous with a gig bag in my hand. Even with the guitar in it, it does not feel like a burden on my back, so its easy to carry. It also feels like a safer way to carry a guitar without the accidental bumping it on something, when you are carrying it in a gig bag. I have not yet tried taking it with me on a flight, but I can see that it would likely fit easily into an overhead compartment, especially on larger planes, such as international flights. As far as stashing it under a plane seat, in my limited flying experience, I rather doubt it would fit under a plane seat, but I could be wrong. The backpack is well-made, padded and roomy enough to put other necessary guitar stuff in: capo, shoulder strap, your essential guitar books,etc. You could even put your laptop computer safely in the separate, padded compartment. The guitar compartment safely cushions and protects the Voyage-Air while you transport it. I cannot give an opinion yet, of how well the Voyage-Air will hold up with a lot of folding and unfolding and toting around, but just like anything, if you are abusive and careless with something, you can expect it's quality to be compromised and possibly break. The shipping was prompt and trouble-free from Amazon, as usual! I would recommend the Voyage-Air for any level player who would like the luxury of traveling a little lighter with a quality instrument. You will not be disappointed in either its quality, appearance or performance to satisfy your need to have your guitar and music with you. Robin Bailey
