MMV = Marvelous Martin Variation!

Having played this guitar in both the dreadnought and the 000 models, I have to say that I am totally amazed at what you get for $1,400 ... no insignificant investment, mind you ... but, for that amount this guitar looks and sounds like the Martins costing twice as much. It has all the glamorous materials of the coveted D-28, including high-gloss finish on a solid sitka top with solid rosewood back and sides, ebony fingerboard and bridge, gold tuning machines.Purists will quickly point out that the internal bracing is not the "X" configuration featured on the D-28, and they will be absolutely correct. They will also tell you very quickly that the MMV uses the mortise & tenon rather than the dovetail neck joint. Once again they would be correct. In both cases, the differences represent concessions to the cost of manufacturing the instrument and the lower price of the MMV certainly reflects the fact that these concessions were made. However, while the bracing can have a significant influence on sound, it's questionable as to whether the type of neck joint is important to sound at all.Either way, for about half the price of a D-28, you get a Martin guitar that looks as good and sounds close enough to make all but the most hide-bound cynic happy. And if you don't agree, just take it back and shell out the extra grand to get what makes you happier!

I've been playing guitar for about 50 years and admiring Martins for most of them. The only thing that stood between me and ownership was -- eeek! -- the price! Not that I felt that a solid wood sided and backed Martin was not worth the $3000 they cost, but still...Martin guitars are rarely discounted. This, I always thought, was because Martin's traditional dealer network has been the small shop that typically caters to the serious musician market. How could Martin undercut such shops by allowing discounts to their common catalog? But with more and more musicians, including serious musicians looking for fine instruments, buying through the large on-line discount stores Martin had a dilemma. How could both their traditional retailers and this large and growing customer base both be satisfied? The answer seems to have been found on the so-called "MMV" model.No one seems to know for sure the meaning of "MMV." Some have suggested it stands for "2005" the year this model was either planned or released. In any case the name "MMV" appears no place in either Martin's catalog or on the instrument. In the later case the name "Custom" is what appears on the instrument's internal "sticker" (actually a beautifully made, laser etched, permanently affixed wooden label).Before I ordered the MMV I did a lot of research and found to my astonishment that this guitar is very highly rated, not just my Martin 'newbies," but by players with years of experience with Martin guitars. Some, looking for an addition to their collection, and others looking to replace a long treasured guitar that was somehow lost to them, have written that they tried many models and chose the MMV because they thought it had the best sound of any they played.I found that a bit hard to believe. Yes, the "MMV" has many of the earmarks of one of the better Martins. Solid rosewood sides and back for instance, and an ebony fingerboard and bridge saddle, but still I wondered, was the quality of these woods up to Martins' regular high standards? Didn't there just have to be some evidence within the guitar itself that explained how it sells for half of what other similar Martins sell for?Upon taking delivery I learned the amazing answers to these questions: No and No!The "MMV" is a fine Martin guitar. There is nothing downscale about it. It looks like a fine Martin. It plays like a fine Martin. It feels like a fine Martin. It sounds like a fine Martin. Bottom line: It IS a fine Martin. As fine as any I have ever had the pleasure to play.Is there any difference between this guitar and, say, a custom D-18 similarly built? Yes. One thing: The bracing.Martins for years have been famous for their "X" bracing. About a dozen years ago Martin brought out a less expensive line of build-in-the-USA, lifetime guaranteed, guitars with a different bracing structure. This was called "A" bracing. It seemed to have two purposes. One was that it was comprised of few parts (and thus one can suppose could be built at a slightly lower cost) and two, it was devised to support the guitar's neck/fingerboard in a way that the traditional bracing does not. For a guitar that has a lifetime guarantee this could be a true plus both for Martin and for owners, because over many years it is not uncommon for Martin to have to reset the neck of a much played instrument -- and in some cases over the long life of an owner and guitar more than once. Making such resets less necessary would be a wonderful thing.The "catch," however, was that "A" braced guitars sounded somewhat different from traditional "X" braced models. Not worse mind you, just different. The "MMV" is apparently something new. It's bracing combines the 'pluses' of the "A" bracing system but returns to a more traditional "X" style bracing below the sound hole. This gives it a more traditional Martin thump on the bottom end, reportedly now married to the slightly sweeter top end that "A" braced guitars became known for.The above is what I have gleaned on the web and been able to support by viewing and playing my own MMV. Could this be why the "MMV" was judged the "best" sounding guitar -- even in comparison with far more costly models in the shop -- to several reviewers? Perhaps.In any case my experience backs those people's judgment. The low end on my "MMV" has the vital thump I always loved in Martin guitars, but the high end -- especially notes played up above the twelfth fret -- have a chime like none I have ever before heard. Frankly they sound so good they give me chills. As, btw, do twelfth-fret harmonics which ring on and on and on after being struck.This is one beautiful sounding, feeling, playing and looking guitar.No it is not inexpensive. But it is such a good value that it is simply hard to believe.I could not recommend the Martin "MMV" more highly.

Why is it cheaper than a D28

The main reason the MMV costs less than a D28 is that it has a bolted mortise/tenon neck-to-body joint instead of a dovetail fitted neck tenon joint which costs more to make. It also has less quality to the solid top, D28's have a better looking specimen solid top than the MMV but it is still a nice solid top; but from guitar to guitar the quality of it's look can vary more than the D28's. It also has a plainer white body binding than the D28 but still looks good. Overall it has a good sound but the bolted mortise/tenon neck-to-body joint gives it more of a higher tone which actually adds to the base bottom which a D28 has more of. The MMV sounds a little like the HD28 which has a scalloped X top brace giving it higher tones mixed with the base tone as opposed to a non-scalloped X top brace on the D28 which has more base, the scallop top brace allows higher tones to cut through on the HD28 as the top vibrates more freely, similar to the MMV with it's bolted mortise/tenon neck-to-body joint sounds. Of course most hard line players, collectors, believe the bolted mortise/tenon neck-to-body joint is something used on the cheapest acoustics, which is true, and may not hold their value as well? but with the solid top, sides and back of the MMV this doesn't have the same cheap sounding affect that a cheaper laminated or plywood guitar with a bolted mortise/tenon neck-to-body joint has.. I feel that for the price it's a fine guitar overall.
