Long known for its rich fullness of tone and clarity at all dynamic levels, Adirondack has always been the primary wood used by many of the great pre-war American guitar manufacturers, as well as smaller custom makers of today.

Could use a tweak

If you've made it here and are thinking about buying the 160-A you probably already know the basics of the instrument so I'll try to provide some insight into whether it's this or something else you might want to buy.1. This guitar is currently made with a 1 and 3/4 inch nut width vs the old 1 and 11/16 so please take that into account. The wider nut does make it easier to pick for some but harder for others, I personally view this as a positive.2. This is an all solid guitar and is made in china, Blueridge was one of the first manufacturers to introduce a high quality guitar was back int he early 2000's when they started producing the Blueridge line with higher standards than their older offerings. They have now started offering adirondack spruce as part of their line-up. This guitar fluctuates in price A LOT, especially on amazon. Keep watching this page and pounce on a good deal if you decide this is the guitar for you, as the prices commonly fluctuate on amazon.. The appearance of the adirondack is not top quality, but that can be expected for the price. This doesn't mean it's not great sounding wood, as they buy in bulk, and Saga doesn't buy from a place that grades the wood based on tone, it's based on visual appearance. So the elasticity, which often produces different tones, could vary, which is why if you buy one that you don't like, it's nice getting it from a place like amazon that has a great return policy.3. Fortunately most of these things do sound great. There is some variance on x-brace placement and woods etc etc, but they all are built to quite a high standard and even a fine experienced player can enjoy playing these guitars. No they aren't built to the standards that a Collings is built from, but in a blind test a lot of people would say they like the sound of a Blueridge just as much as many more expensive guitars. Fair warning though, there is a chance you'll have to get a set-up done on your guitar, as many times the nut needs to be files down a little and the saddle adjusted along with the truss rod to get the thing to play the best. These things come all the way from China, so it's already gone through quite an environmental change, so if it gets to you and isn't messed up, it's probably not going to develop many issues.4. The reason I think these need to be updated is pretty simple, Blueridge was the brainchild of Greg Rich who designed most of the guitars. He now works at "The Music Link" which makes the Recording King guitars. Since he left Saga hasn't really updated a lot of thins besides adding adirondack and coming out with new models, what I'm talking about more is how they build them. Other companies use Nitro now, Eastman, Recording King, etc. These guitars are int he same price bracket as the Blueridges. The other guitars also feature more "vintage" style neck shapes and better tuners. Blueridge needs to change a few things and "update" their guitars. As more and more people want that vintage vibe and Blueridge simply is a little behind the other makers at this point. I sold my blueridge, and now I own a couple Eastman guitars. They are simply better made, and more hand made. This isn't an ad for Eastman, as the blueridge is %90 of the guitar for a bit less. But I think they easily could get %10 further and I for one know I'd be willing to pay the extra for the different more "vintage" features.At the end of the day this is a great guitar at a great price!

The price of this seemed to be lower than normal and I had read glowing reviews on this guitar on the various guitar forums. So I took a chance of ordering a guitar on line. Amazon was awesome as usual as far as delivery speed. It arrived very well packed. Fit and finish are very good, I noticed a few very small dimples on the back but not significant. Interior bracing etc well done. Rosewood is beautiful, the finish is really smooth and glossy. It looks like a more expensive instrument. An important note, the headstock is not the gaudy one in the Amazon picture. This is the Br-160A2, which is a newer model with 1 3/4 nut and a much plainer headstock. For me, if it was not one of the newer ones, it was going back. I think if Saga went with less bling on the headstock they would be selling more guitars. This one has the less ornate version and I like it.I read that Adirondack tops take a while to break in. The guitar was very tight sounding right out of the box. Kinda tinny. As a side note, I had read about this thing called a tone rite that accelerates the break in process on guitars. I alse read that an aquarium pump and a way to attach it to the strings is a rough equivilent to the $150 tone rite. So I invested $6 in a pump and some rubber grommets and gave it three days on the guitar. I also switched out the strings to medium PB's. I am happy to say the the guitar is already mellowing out. It is clear, loud with a great bass and shiny trebles. Lots of harmonics, setup is spot on. Intonation perfect. Lets face it, people that buy this are trying to get a poor mans Martin Marquis. This thing is really close, not as dead ringer but close. I would say the only thing stopping it from the Martin tone is the trebles are still a little tinny on the high E. But as time goes on, that seems to be subsiding, and I have only had it a week. Overall I would have to say that this was a good purchase, for the money you can't go wrong. Martin purist don't like this guitar because you are getting very close to the same result for about 6 times less. The fact that these seem to be sold out everywhere is an indication of their worth.

Intermediate $$$, Professional Tone

After lots of research, I narrowed my choices to the Blueridge BR-160A and the BG-160. I had played a BR-160A, but I couldn't find a BG-160 for comparison. So I went with the known BR-160A.I have a 15 year old Yamaha f-310 that is my beginners guitar. This BR-160A feels very similar with the skinny neck. The Yamaha is a bit more comfortable to play. The Blueridge feels a bit sharp on the edges of the neck. But tone and quality far surpass the old laminate guitar.Also, I purchased the Saga Golden Gate Premier arched top Case for Blueridge Dreadnaught Guitars and it fits like a glove. Got it for $44 from amazon.Positives: Intermediate pricing, good quality, great tone. I was a little apprehensive about ordering from Amazon and getting the factory setup rather than professional setup. Guitar arrived in perfect condition and factory setup is great. Intonation good, action good with slight drag on high strings. I'll probably take it in for professional setup at some point, but nothing critical.Negatives: Tuners feel weak, skinny neck, frets feel high. Grain pattern in the particular guitar that I received is not as striking as some of the others that I have seen. I guess this is a risk you take when you buy a guitar sight unseen.
