The Loar's new hand carved, polyurethane-finished archtop cutaway guitar offers an excellent option for traditional jazz guitarists who want to make the classic archtop sound heard clearly for ensemble playing. The Kent Armstrong floating pickup amplifies the sweet natural tone of the hand-carved spruce top, while the Florentine cutaway allows unrestricted access to the upper frets, making the LH-350 perfect for either soloing or accompaniment. The Loar Hand-Carved Archtop Cutaway Guitar is assembled with a solid hand-carved spruce top and maple, back and sides. The bone nut and compensated adjustable ebony bridge let the sound of the select tonewoods resonate clearly, and the bound rosewood fretboard is both beautiful and durable. The bound pickguard with a single volume knob adds to the vintage look and feel. The archtop is finished with a meticulously inlaid mother-of-pearl “Fleur-de-Lys” headstock design and a polyurethane lacquer tobacco sunburst finish to stay true to classic design and style.

A real, carved-top archtop at a plywood price

I've owned a number of laminated top and pressed-top archtop guitars, all of which retailed for more than this guitar, and none of which sounded as good acoustically. With a set of bronze wound .012s or better yet, .013s, you can get a solid traditional rhythm sound as well as an excellent amplified sound. If you play primarily amplified, a set of flatwounds gives that classic jazz sound. A set of D'Addario ground wounds strikes a nice compromise. (I go back and forth between D'Addarios flatwound .013s and various bronze wound .013s, depending on whether I'm playing primarily electric of acoustic.)The LH-350 features a floating pickup, which means that the top is free to vibrate. There's only one control- volume- mounted on the pickguard. Rather than drilling a hole in the body or mounting a jack on the pickguard, a strap jack is used here- a good choice, I think. It keeps the cord out of the way and avoids putting stress on a fragile part of the instrument.Potential buyers will probably also be looking at the Godin archtop guitars in this price range, like the Godin 5th Avenue Archtop Acoustic Guitar - Natural. While Godins are excellent guitars, their archtops have more of a flat top guitar sound, at least to my ears. The Loar has much more of that classic, percussive archtop sound that cuts through a big band when played hard. Played more gently, it has a warm, woody sound that works well for soloing. That's a function of the carved top, which gives you more dynamic range than a plywood or pressed top.Mine arrived with only one tiny flaw: One of the mounting screws of the pickup was drilled a fraction of an inch off, which resulted in the pickup being slightly angled. (I should note that I bought mine used from Musician's Friend, not from Amazon.) And that was it. Everything else was spot on.This is an excellent instrument for big band, small combo, or solo use. With lighter gauge strings it would make a great blues box, too. I'm very pleased with mine.
