A True 5 Star Guitar

For as long as I can remember I have wanted a slope shouldered guitar. But my options seemed to be either too expensive or a cheapo. The Martin CEO4 or CEO6 were the real dream, but lets face it, those are rpetty much guitars for the very rich. The Gibson J-45 of course is the original and the inspiration, but it too is expensive and in my opinion overpriced. The Epiphone knockoff looks the part, but of the 10 or more of them I have tried not one of them sounded any better than a $10.00 garage sale guitar. Recently there have been a few others like the Blueridge and Recording King, but I just could not get my hands on one locally, and frankly hated the headstocks of both. Oh if I could just afford the Martin! But then came along the Historic series from Tanglewood. It had the look and the headstock I wanted. So I set out to the only guitar store in town which carried Tanglewood in the hopes they might have one in stock. They didn't and they were apparently not willing to order one unless I paid for it up front. I simply cannot pay out over $500.00 for a guitar until I play it. Just can't.This is where my full 5 star rating comes from. I called Tanglewood who got me in touch with a local rep. I told him about the store and he told me that they were looking for a new dealer in town and that he would have the guitar in my hands in a few days. This was a Friday. On the following Monday the phone rang and another guitar store in town called me to let me know my TW40-SD VS was there for me to try and they also sent along a TRD VS(another slope sholder vintage sunburst) just in case I might like it as well. That is what I call customer service!!!!!I first tried the TRD VS and it was nice. Real nice. But when he handed me the TW40-SD VS it was as if the angels were singing. I was in love!Okay, enough of all that. Here is the review:The TW40-SD VS is an Advanced Jumbo J-45 copy with a lot of differences and a unique guitar to say the least.It is a solid spruce top with laminated mahogany back and sides with cream binding on the body but not on the neck or headstock. It has butterbean vintage open style tuners that work well. The headstock is a simple Martin style and looks great. The neck is where this guitars is VERY different from any other dread I have ever played. It is seemingly as wide as a classical guitar and actually frets almost as easy too. If you are a fingerstyle player who prefers the style of a dread but find it hard to get around the neck this is a guitar for you. Like the 00 and 000 style guitars, this nack is wide and very playable and SUPER FAST. Which is why it is so strange. Generally, a wide neck is not associated with fast. At least not from my esperience. As a strummer it can hold its own in a lot of ways but I do find that this is the guitar's single weakness in some areas. When playing bluesy type strumming chords like A E D the guitars sings nicely and it packs volume. But when settling in for some folk style music such as Niel Young or some classic rock ballads like the Allman Brothers Melissa it is not as even in delivering each single note. Although bass and treble are fine individually, I just dont find it as capable when strummed. Don't get me wrong. I love this guitar! Hence the 5 stars. But it, like the other guitars I own has it's unique stronger points. For playing Led Zeppelin's, the Rain Song, this guitar comes to life. For playing any kind of hard attack picking it really really shines.For those of you who don't know, Tanglewood is a British guitar maker and they make value priced high end guitars. This guitar is from the Historic series and was designed under the stewardship of Swedish master luthier Michael Sanden.To compare it farily you would need to compare it to what you need. If you want bassy woody Martin tone this is not going to cut the mustard. If you like the Gibson tone and look but also want playability like an 00 or 000 style guitar this thing will knock your socks off.Before finishing this I just have to add, I own 4 guitars, a Martin DX1AE, a Sigma DR-35, and and Ovation AA21, and although the other 3 have certain charachteristics which I love, my go to guitar formost music is this TW40-SD VS. It is easy on the fingers like a classical guitar, yet still delivers enough range in almost every way possible. Oh, and dang it is pretty!
