The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the only company to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. so i've had a d28 martin, taylors, and the like.my luthier kept telling me to get a collings and you won't be disappointed. as fate would have it, i found a d2h online at well below the low retail prices.within a week it arrived at my doorstep. the tkl case told me that something of quality lies in this case. the case itself was a top quality coffin with six buckles and made of fine materials.inside,the smell of a new collings is enough to let you know that a great axe is here. if looks could kill, the d2h makes a martin d28 look like a toy. every seam, binding, inlay is so well crafted that there are no bumps, cracks, waves and the like. just pure perfection. the woods are just tight. the premium quality sitka spruce top is tight grained and creamy white in color.the premium east indian rosewood is just that premium, five levels more beautiful and darker than any martin or taylor that i've owned.the finish is immaculate.the best part it fitted like a glove just out of the collings shop. i probably will be wasting my money to get it setup since it seems just perfect now. the neck was like no other.the sound...wow. tonally, as i played my d28 and the d2h alternately, was no comparison. the collings just sounded like it is five levels above the martin, which it is. even the wife noticed the impressive tones projecting from the collings.spend the money. it'll be well worth the price.

Over the past few years, I've bought (and sold) a number of guitars, gradually working up to the higher end Taylors, Martins and now, a Collings D2H. Played my first one at Hill Country Guitars in Wimberley, Tx (about 30 miles from Austin where Collings guitars are born) and decided then and there that I had to have one.Sold my Martin D-18 to (partially) fund it; that's how much I loved the sound. Clear, bell-like tones, whether you are attacking or caressing the strings; it doesn't matter. While my playing skill does not (yet) do it justice, I can see where this guitar and I will have a long and satisfying time together.
