Inspired by the incredible craftsmanship and design of the Golden Age, The Loar LH-200 is an acoustic guitar with a classic pre-war body style, outstanding features, and a strong, full tone. From the vintage sunburst finish to the open gear butterbean tuners, the LH-200 is modeled after small-bodied flat top acoustic guitars from the 1930's. The guitar features a solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck, ivory-colored body binding and a rosewood fretboard. This model also features a bound peghead with a delicate fern inlay in abalone and M.O.P. by veteran designer Greg Rich. Following early 20th century bracing patterns, the LH-200 has an incredibly lightweight body that delivers outstanding projection. The LH-200's smaller body size is great for songwriters and touring musicians who want a great sounding acoustic guitar to take to the stage. The guitar's beautiful looks and vintage features are appealing for all playing styles.

A REAL guitar for the price of a beginner's toy.

I had read about "The Loar" and sister company "Recording King" online and was impressed with the many positive reviews of these American designed, Chinese manufactured guitars. The Loar is probably best known for their beautiful hand carved archtop guitars and mandolins, but started making reproductions of 1920's style flatop blues guitars a few years back. You can find out more technical details by searching the net. The LH200 is the model that has received so much press, a true "parlour" sized guitar with a retail of about $519, but found online at most stores between $339 and $389. Not being a fan of "sunburst" finishes,(the standard finish) I passed until more recently, when the LH200-NA (for natural finish) model came out. The slightly yellowed "antique" looking finish brings an aged glow to the solid spruce top and the the laminated mahogany bookmatched back just GLOWS. The ivoroid binding, front, back, and on the neck and headstock really finishes the look, with a clever mother of pearl faux inlay on the headstock and open back nickel finished Grover "butterbean" tuners for a bit of sparkle. All in all the effect is a knockout! Yes, this is an inexpensive guitar, and if you look closely you'll find a few very minor finishing flaws here and there...most so tiny you'll simply appreciate them as handmade variances. Still, this is a MUCH nicer construction than my cheapie Epi AJ200. THE SOUND, however, simply blew me away. Tonally, this guitar is a TENOR, with a tiny bit of baritone upper bass, or alto like mid-highs on the "female" side. The volume won't match a jumbo or dreadnought, but it's surprisingly loud and out projects those bigger boxes in the middle ranges. This is truly a songwriter-singer's guitar. It sounds cool with a slide for blues, but that's not my bag. What really blew me away is the incredibly long, even sustain, which trails off for an eternity with nary a wiggle in pitch. With NEW or OLD strings, my AJ is all over the place by the time it fades to black, which drives my ears nuts!! But the LH200 just holds chords or solo string plucks perfectly, to the very last whisper. Action is perfect down to the bottom few frets, and since I don't find myself there too often it doesn't bother me enough to mess with. The factory installed D'Addario strings tuned right up with a bit of stretching. I have only slightly retuned ONCE in the past month and it is still right on. I will probably play with different strings since I'm convinced there may be even more perfection awaiting in the midrange. Just my opinion, but tonally speaking, I don't know where you'll find a better composing guitar--or maybe ANY guitar--for less money. As an aside, I got an incredible deal here on AMAZON! I stumbled across it for $202 (yes!) plus $9.99 shipping and placed it in my cart. I think it was an old introductory offer because I closed the window for a moment to check another site--sure enough, $389--and when I came back a message said the page was no longer valid. HMMPH!! Not giving up, I went to the cart again and it was still showing $202, so I hit "buy" and it went through! I should have bought the other three they had in stock, because the next time I came back, the price was $279, and now it's up to $329. It did take a while--they kept sending delay messages and "do you want to cancel?" notices, but I just waited it out and it arrived in about 16 days. In my opinion, the price is sweet enough at $329-$389, and in reality (don't tell The Loar) I'd even pay retail if I had to. Don't be afraid to take the plunge, buy one--you won't be sorry!
